International Geography Olympiad

 Hong Kong, China

 30th July to 5th August, 2019.

Geography Olympiad

Geography Olympiad is an annual event where Secondary School students between the age of 16 and 19 years from countries around the world compete and show-case their knowledge and skills in Geography education. Each participating country organizes a regional and a national competition as pre-qualification for the International Geography Olympiad (iGeo).

The Geography Olympiad consists of three parts:
1. Written 2. Multimedia 3. Substantial fieldwork requiring observation.
The third part leads to cartographic representation and geographical analysis.

Excitement was in the air as schools across Nigeria settled to battle for the trophy as well as for the joy of representing the country at the International Geography Olympiad (iGeo). These students represented months and months of hard work, diligent preparation efforts and a strong determination not only to showcase their knowledge of geography but to win the Olympiad gold. The very best have emerged from the 6 Regional Geography Olympiads and are now qualified to represent Nigeria at the International Geography Olympiad.

The International Geography Olympiads are held under the auspices of the INTERNATIONAL GEOGRAPHICAL UNION(IGU), through the IGU Olympiad Task Force.

 Aim & Objectives

The aim of the Geography Olympiad is to to position geography education as a subject of choice in Nigeria.
Objectives:
➤Stimulate active interest in geographical and environmental studies among young people
➤Contribute positively to debate about the importance of geography as a senior secondary school subject by drawing attention to the quality of geographical knowledge, skills and interests among young people
➤Facilitate social contacts between young people from different countries and in doing so, contribute to the understanding between nations

Geography is the study of the earth, such as places, landforms, people and processes by which the earth changes over time. The knowledge of geography provides a solid foundation for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The proper and early introduction of students to geography will expand their career opportunities in fields that are rewarding. Students are exposed to the preliminary concepts of geography as a social-studies subject at the Junior Secondary School (J.S.S) and the actual teaching of geography in Senior Secondary School (S.S.S) in Nigeria.

 International Geography Olympiad
iGeo 2019

The 2019 International Geography Olympiad will be held in Summer 2019 in Hong Kong.
The 2018 International Geography Olympiad was held in Quebec City, Canada from July 31-August 6, 2018 with 43 countries and 165 participants. Nigeria sent its representatives to participate fully in all the activities including the international board meeting of the iGeo.
The 2017 International Geography Olympiad was held in Serbia Belgrade with 41 countries and 160 participants.

The 2016 edition of the International Geography Olympiad (iGeo) was held between 16th and 22nd of August 2016, in the Chinese capital of Beijing. Nigeria sent its representatives to participate fully in all the activities including the international board meeting of the iGeo. On the first day the Nigerian representatives participated in the Written Response Test, and then had a short field trip to the Forbidden City located in the centre of Beijing, China. The Forbidden City has one of the largest museum complexes in the world and was also the former residence of the emperors of imperial China. The next day Team Nigeria participated in Field Work, the exercise was marred by heavy rain and the delegates were completely drenched and had their samples destroyed by the torrential downpour. Nonetheless, Team Nigeria continued to participate in all the activities including the second Field Work, which was geographical decision-making test, a multimedia test, and cultural displays. Team Nigeria participated and had their culture themed poster judged to be the second best in the world after the Netherlands.

Anyone can imagine the snowball effect the Olympiads has been having on geography education in Nigeria; geography teachers have greatly improved their tutoring techniques, students now read wholistically to win. All these are the true benefits of the Olympiads. It can even be argued that the most desired outcome is for the Geography Olympiads to spur scholarship and interest in geography in Nigeria.
